Spotlight: Hurt Me Good by @JHaliSteele #PNR #vampires

Barringer Ganteau has hunted enough demon-mixed vampires to last a million lifetimes. His wish is to see all demi-vamps maimed, preferably dead. Single-handedly, he attempts to vanquish the scourge of mixed breeds from the face of the earth. Then Ringer meets Armada, a demi-vamp with the power to deliver the kind of pain he desires and melt his frozen heart.

Armada comes from Haiti, carrying the exotic heat of the islands and her kind with her. When she faces a cold-hearted vampire, a being superior to her mixed heritage, she vows to hate him as much as he hates her. Armada hadn’t reckoned with the vamp’s ability to use pain to bring out a side of her she had not known existed.

Hurt Me Good 2nd edition is available at Changeling Press

She’d only learned about the demon blood a few months ago. Hell, she didn’t want to sprout horns or grow a tail. Armada had witnessed firsthand what a diseased demi-vamp looked like when she hunted with Split. The ragged teeth and yellow skin made her sick.

“Guess I’m not the only one in the room who kills demi-vamps.”

She spun to catch Barringer watching her from the doorway. “Fuck you.”

“Oooh! Go to hell.”

“A place more suitable to your kind.” Armada didn’t grasp the meaning of his glare. Ringer’s voice grew softer. “Come eat, I cooked.”

“Why, when you could fabricate it?”

“Because I like to cook and fabricated doesn’t taste as good.”

“Probably tastes like shit.”

Red circled his violet eyes. She understood that look, having seen it often when Split became irritated. “You can let me know; I’ve never tasted shit.”

She reached for a vase on the table and lifted it to hurl at his head.

“Can you afford to replace that? I will take it out in trade.”

“God, I hate you.”

“Living with me is easier once you understand my rules.”

“I’m not living with you.”

“Yeah, you are.” He strode to stand beside her seat. “One, don’t throw my shit around; two, eat what I cook or fabricate your own shit.” He wrapped a curl of her hair around his finger. “Three, when we fuck, we do it my way or not at all.”

Standing, she walked past him and turned. “I like not at all.”

“Honey, you’ll be in my bed by nightfall.”

He walked to where she stood. “Linen closet is at the top of the stairs. You’ll need bedclothes for the sofa.”

She glanced around the space for the first time. Expensive antiques dotted shiny plank wood floors. The furniture was masculine and in a mix of dark chocolate and red hues. Large windows remained bare of curtains. Probably a voyeuristic jackass. The living room was large and bright. Good thing there was no truth to the fact vampires could only move around at night. Sunlight streamed in the window.

“Only one bedroom?” From the floor plan, she knew upstairs held more than a single room, unless, of course, it was a damn large room.

He laughed and looked over his shoulder. “Only one you can enter.”

“Hope you like baked chicken.” He grinned. “With lots of garlic.”

“I’ll fix a salad.”

She reached the kitchen in time to see him fork a breast and a thigh onto a plate. He followed the chicken with a large dollop of mashed potatoes. “Do I look like a salad fixings kind of guy to you?”

“Jesus.” She yanked open the refrigerator door and peered inside. Closing her eyes, she attempted to bring salad greens to Barringer’s house. Nothing. She could transport, but that was with Split’s help, and right now, he seemed absent from her head. One day she’d get the hang of vampire tricks and be able to use them by herself. Spying an old, spotted apple, she grabbed it. “This will do.”

“Whatever.” He bit into the meat and chewed for a minute. That was followed by a big helping of potatoes. After he’d swallowed the food, he took a sip of white wine. He gazed at her with his head tilted. “You’re thick enough to miss one meal.”

The apple slammed dead in the center of his plate sending the chicken flying into his lap and mashed potatoes covering the front of his shirt.

Something stalks the streets of Salem and there’s magic in the air… Amazon:

As Midnight Loves the Moon – by Beth D. Carter

Thank you so much for hosting me!  “As Midnight Loves the Moon” went through many incarnations before becoming a MMF story.  I had originally written it without Daphne, as a straight MM story and no sex, but it sat for a long time because something was missing…until I thought about adding a human girl into the mix, and then my poor dying heroine popped into my head.  After that, well, who doesn’t think of sex and vampires?  It’s almost symbolic, as the fang slides in so does his throbbing member.

Okay, sorry for the purple prose!  LOL!

I’ve also gotten a lot of compliments to the title.  I must admit, I didn’t dream of this all on my own.  One of my favorite campy movies from the 80’s was “The Pirate Movie” with Christopher Atkins and Kristy McNichol.  In the movie, Frederic (Atkins) asks Mabel (McNichol) “Mabel, do you love me?”  And she replies, “As midnight loves the moon.”  I’ve always loved that line.

 As Midniught Loves the Moon

About the Book:

Wayde Wallace is a vampire.  He’s been alone for a long time, until he smells the sunshine scent of a woman and finds Daphne Sabella.  Her blood smells intoxicating until he catches the stench of sickness upon her and realizes Daphne is dying.

Alexander Malden is a Shade cop sent to patrol the supernaturals who lives among humans.  A rogue vampire is killing women and he thinks Wayde is the monster because only a trickster can make him feel such lust and longing.

To prove his innocence, Wayde goes out to find the real rogue vampire and Alex can’t help but follow because the mating bond has already settled between them.  And when they believe they can finally help Daphne, she’s become the next victim.  Now they must rescue her and turn her before her heart gives out.

Wayde looked behind Alex and noticed their conversation had gathered a few watchers. His gaze flickered back up to the handsome cop. “I suggest you sit down,” he said softly. “We’re attracting human notice.”

Alex glanced over his shoulder, probably to double check he told the truth, and slid into the booth, staring at him and carefully keeping out of his reach. “You think by distracting me in a bar, I won’t kill you?”

“You’re so bloodthirsty. Again, I ask you, why do you want to kill me? I’m not your rogue vampire.”

Alex’s eyebrows skyrocketed. “Right.”

“I’m not,” he stressed. “I’m a bookstore owner. I deal in extremely rare books, usually pre-Gutenberg printing press, although I never turn down a book in excellent condition from around 1040 to the mid-1800’s. Beer?”

“No,” Alex answered with a low growl. “Listen, you tried to kill me yesterday—”

“You attacked me,” Wayde interrupted. He pushed his beer aside and kept his eyes steady on the warrior in front of him. “And if I wanted you dead, you’d be dead. As you learned last night, I am able to hold my own.”

“I’ve come better prepared.” Alex opened his jacket a little more to show his gun.

“Ah. Your master plan is to take me out back and shoot me?”

“Of course. Your suggestion, remember?”

“Of all the things I said last night, that’s what stood out?” Wayde chuckled. “Listen, I have your sword at my shop. You can stop by anytime to pick it up.”

“I don’t actually plan for you to be alive for much longer.”

“Then I beg to differ,” he replied. “Have you ever killed a vampire before?”

He saw the answer before Alex muttered “no.”

He shifted forward in his seat, leaning toward Alex, who stiffened at the gesture. Then he focused on Alex, blocking out everything around them. The noise, the smell, the crackle of vinyl seats all faded as he called forth his hunger. It rose sharply, like it always did, waiting eagerly to be sated. It was heat and power and magic, all rolled together, bursting forth like an invisible web. And as soon as he captured Alex’s eyes with his own, he knew he had the man.

“I want you,” he murmured, weaving his spell. He knew that his voice took on a husky timber, that his eyes blazed with blue fire, and that his pheromones heated up. “Do you want me too, Alex?”

Author Bio

I like writing about the very ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors or corporate highrollers.  I try to write characters who aren’t cookie cutters and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box.  I love writing characters who are real, complex and full of flaws, heroes and heroines who find redemption through love.

I’ve been pretty fortunate in life to experience some amazing things.  I’ve lived in France, traveled throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand.  I am a mom to an amazing little boy.  I’m surrounded by friends and family.  I hate washing dishes but I love cooking. I hate washing clothes but I love wearing them. Writing my bio is difficult because I never know what to say so I hope you like this one.  My favorite color is red but I look best in black (it’s slimming).  I hate people who don’t pick up their dog’s crap in public places, people who don’t use turn signals, and I really hate people who are rude and condescending. I especially hate discrimination in all and every form.  And although I love holding a book in my hand, I absolutely adore my e-reader, whom I’ve named Ruby.  I love to hear from readers so I’ve made it really easy to find me on the web:

Insatiable – Now Available!

On her way home from work, the last thing Alexa expected was to literally bump into the man of her dreams. Carson seems to be everything she’s ever wanted. He’s handsome, funny, courteous… and he sets her body on fire. There’s just one little drawback. Carson is a vampire.

Questions for Alexa and Carson…

Carson, what was the first thing that drew you to Alexa?

Her eyes. They were so innocent, and yet seductive at the same time. When I looked into her eyes, I saw forever, and for the first time, that didn’t make me feel lonely.

Alexa, when you found out Carson was a vampire, what did you first feel?

Scared. But only for a brief moment. I’d already figured out by then he wouldn’t hurt me, so the news was more startling than anything. It only took  my brain a minute to process the fact that while he might have sharp, pointy teeth, he was still the man I was starting to fall for, head over heals.

Carson, is there anything you’d like to say to Alexa? Maybe something you haven’t told her before?

She’s my light and my love. I hope she knows just what she means to me, that I show her everyday how important she is, because she’s my entire world. Without her, my existence would be a long and lonely one.

Alexa, do you ever regret meeting Carson that night?

No! My life may not have turned out the way I’d envisioned, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Carson brings out the best in me, no matter the situation. He’s very supportive of my work, even though we could exist quite comfortably without me ever working another day. He knows it’s important to me, so he stands by my side and gives me the freedom I need.

Night’s Embrace (a vampire novella) is Now Available!

Annabel is ready to give herself to Poe, body and soul. But will he accept her offer?

Just as Annabel is ready to end her life, an amazing man comes to her in the dark of night. Her body responds to him and she finds that she wants him more than she’s ever wanted anyone. Allowing him to make love to her, she decides that she’ll do whatever he asks, as long as he’ll keep her with him — even if he is a vampire.

The darkness rolled in like dark clouds in a thunderstorm.  The inky black night surrounded me, wrapped me in its embrace.  It had been a month since “the incident” had happened, and while it might seem minor to some, it was the final nail in my coffin. I had tried to carry on, but I couldn’t take another thing life had to throw my way. If I’d been able to afford a psychologist, I’m sure he would have diagnosed me with some fancy term and prescribed me a bottle of pills. Instead, I was taking matters into my own hands.

The hair on the back of my neck stood on end, letting me know I wasn’t alone.  I knew I should be afraid, yet I wasn’t.  I couldn’t bring myself to care enough to be frightened.  The numbness had spread through me, leaving nothing but emptiness inside of me, a large echoing cavern that I couldn’t fill.

I felt a puff of breath against my skin.  A chill raced down my spine as my eyes stared sightlessly ahead, the dark impenetrable.  I didn’t know what was to come, but I stood stoically, waiting to see what would happen. It couldn’t be any worse than what I had planned for myself.

Soft lips trailed down my neck to my shoulder.  Teeth softly brushed against my skin.  I felt a small prick against my neck and then warmth spread through me.  I closed my eyes, a sigh on my lips.  Whatever was happening, it felt right.  Arms encircled my waist as they pulled me against a tall, hard body.  Muscles bulged in the arms that held me gently.  A lover’s embrace.

Fluid trailed down my neck and my captor lapped it up like a kitten drinking milk.  “So sweet,” said a husky voice that left chills on my flesh.

“Who are you?” I whispered.

“It doesn’t matter.”

He turned me to face him.  I looked up into fathomless gray eyes, the color of a winter morning, set in a pale face.  He had a long elegant nose that led to full lips.  Shaggy brown hair fell past his shoulders.

When he smiled, I saw canines that were long and pointed.  Vampire my mind said, but I shook the thought away.  Vampires weren’t real.  My hand drifted to my neck and I felt the two small pinpricks.  A breath caught in my throat as I stared up at him in surprise.  Or were they?

“You’re a vampire,” I heard myself say in a quiet voice filled with wonder.

“Yes.” He watched me intently, probably expecting me to scream at any moment. And had I been anyone else, I might have. But a woman willing to die was another matter all together.

I tipped my head to the side, exposing my neck to him once more.  “Do it.  Go ahead and end it.”

He looked puzzled and slightly taken aback. “Do what?”

“Bite me.  End my life.”

He shook his head and looked exasperated. “Silly creature, why would I want to end your life? I feed to live, not to kill.”

To my humiliation, I felt tears gather in my eyes and slip silently down my cheeks. “Please,” I begged.  “I can’t go on living this way. I’m tired of feeling empty.”

I felt his intense stare as if he could see right through me.  I wondered how long it would take to make a decision.  Did I not taste good?  Was there something wrong with my blood? Or was there just something wrong with me?

“Why do you feel empty?” he finally asked.

“If I knew, I wouldn’t feel this way.  I only see shades of gray and darkness.  When I wake up, all I want to do is close my eyes and sleep until another day has passed.  I go through the motions, smile at people when I should, but it’s all meaningless.  Inside I feel like there’s a void, a giant black hole in the middle of my soul sucking the life right out of me.” It wasn’t that I wanted to feel the way I did. I just hadn’t had a reason to be happy.

He grinned. “So you have a vampire in your soul?”

I hadn’t really thought of it that way, but it made a sort of crazy sense to me. “Yeah, I guess I do.”

His long fingers reached out and stroked my jaw. “You’re too beautiful to die.”

Beautiful?  Me?  I wanted to laugh, but also wanted to cry.  I couldn’t remember the last time someone had seen me as beautiful.  I certainly didn’t see myself that way.  When I looked in the mirror, I saw nondescript brown hair, plain brown eyes, and average facial features.  I saw a body that was too plump to be fashionable, rounded in more places than it should be.  What was beautiful about me?

He stared into my eyes as if reading my thoughts.  And perhaps he could.  Before I knew what he was doing, he leaned forward and brushed his lips against mine. They were petal soft and chilled to the touch.  His mouth moved over mine, coaxing me to join in his dance.

A spark ignited inside of me, a small glowing ember.  Warmth spread through my soul and for the first time in years, I was happy to be alive.  This dangerous, deadly, gorgeous man made me feel more alive than any of my family or friends had in a long time.  Nothing in this world had felt half as right as being kissed by him. It amazed me how I could feel so much in just one kiss. It wasn’t like I hadn’t been kissed before, because I had, but Poe’s kiss put all the others to shame. With just one kiss, he pushed aside my thoughts of killing myself.  I’d come to the cavern so no one would find me. I knew my landlady wouldn’t be able to handle finding a dead body. She was sweet and I didn’t want to do that to her. And I didn’t have any family or friends to speak of. Just an ex who kept showing up repeatedly, no matter how many times I pushed him away.

With just one kiss, Poe had given me a gift. The gift of hope. I’d felt bleak and hopeless for so long that I’d forgotten what it felt like to want to live. But with one kiss, he’d given all that back to me, and more. As if he were a drug, I found that I wanted more. Kissing Poe was the equivalent of basking in the sunlight.

— from Serenity’s Wish, Tales of Moonspell #3

JCS_Moonspell3_ReneeAvailable April 26 2013

Julian studied her in the candlelight. The soft glow caressed her face, making her even more beautiful. Her long, thick hair hung in curls to her waist. While some might call her heavy, he loved her lush curves. Just the thought of having her in his arms was enough to make him hard. He’d wanted her from the first moment he’d laid eyes on her.

When she’d first been brought to the mansion, he’d worried about his reaction to her. It was obvious Aiden had returned with Serenity instead of Daniela, and he’d wondered what that meant. If Serenity was meant for Aiden, then Julian knew he’d never have a chance with the little goddess. But he’d waited and watched and after several days he’d noticed that Aiden hadn’t once sent for Serenity, hadn’t ventured anywhere near her rooms. When Aiden had begun taking women from the harem again, Julian knew the man felt nothing for Serenity.

He’d bided his time, wanting to take things slowly, give her a chance to get to know him, adjust to his presence in her life. He knew that living amongst vampires couldn’t be easy for her. But she’d thrown him for a loop today. When he’d seen her on the floor grabbing her chest, fear had nearly consumed him. He’d realized in that moment that he didn’t want to lose her — ever. And then she’d told him she didn’t want to be a vampire, that she wouldn’t let him change her. Well, he’d just have to change her mind about that.

He watched as she ate her dinner, taking dainty bites of everything, slowly sipping her wine. She was the loveliest thing he’d ever seen, and he’d lived for over a hundred years. It wasn’t like he’d never had women before. In fact, before Serenity had come to the mansion, he’d visited the harem on a regular basis, but once he’d seen her that had changed. A few of his friends had commented on his “strange behavior,” but he waved away their concerns. If he told them he’d fallen in love with the woman before him, they’d never let him hear the end of it. Humans were for food, not for love. But then, he didn’t plan on her being human much longer. He had a few weeks to make her realize that she belonged with him; he just wasn’t sure what it would take.
