JCS_IGB12Heidi_XL

Heidi’s life hasn’t been easy since she dropped out of school at sixteen to have a baby. The worst mistake she ever made was moving in with her boyfriend Brent, who turned out to be an abusive bastard, but with no education and no job, there’s nowhere for her to go. Her life for the last five years has disillusioned her that happily-ever-after could possibly exist… Then he comes into her life.

When Raylic rushes to Heidi’s aid, the last thing he expects is to end up with house guests, but she and her small son, Shane, are just what he needs. They bring life to his monstrous home and make him want things better left alone. But the more time he spends with the little family, the more he wants to keep them with him forever. Even knowing Heidi is pregnant with another man’s child doesn’t stop him from wanting to claim her.

Heidi knows Raylic is one of the good guys, but can she dare trust her heart to someone again? He’s everything she’s ever wanted, but she knows wanting and having aren’t the same thing.

Heidi hoped like hell that Shane had gotten out of the house. She hadn’t heard the door open or shut but prayed her little boy had run to safety and not stayed to help her. Despite his young age, he acted like her protector when his dad got mad, which was far too often.

She placed a protective hand over her stomach as she cowered in the corner of the room. Brent towered over her, his face flush from too much alcohol and the rage that was burning in his veins. It wasn’t the first time he’d struck her, and she knew it wouldn’t be the last, unless she finally managed to escape. But where would she go? Without a job, or friends, or family, only the streets waited for her and their small son.

“Everyone was talking tonight about how you’ve been whoring around behind my back,” Brent said, spit flying from his lips.

“Brent, please. You know how rumors are around here.” She swallowed the knot of fear in her throat. She’d learned the hard way that fighting back only made it worse. When she fought back, it pushed him to the point of nearly killing her, and she had to keep living to take care of their son. She couldn’t leave him in Brent’s hands. Either her boyfriend would kill him, or he’d turn her sweet boy into a monster.

“Stupid, lying bitch. Did you think I wouldn’t hear about it? I bet that brat in your belly isn’t even mine. Who’s to say the other little snot is mine either? You just saw a meal ticket and latched on.”

“Of course, it’s yours, Brent. They both are. You know I haven’t been with anyone else.”

He backhanded her across the face again, an explosion of pain ricocheting through her cheek and rattling her brain. Another blow landing in almost the same spot nearly knocked her off her feet. She had just braced herself on the wall when another fist pummeled her stomach. Heidi cried out, her hands clutching her belly, hoping he hadn’t harmed their child. She’d tried damn hard not to get pregnant a second time by him, but the condom had broken two months ago.

She saw his hand wind back for another blow and cowered down, but it never came.

“I know humans play by different rules, but where I come from, we don’t beat females,” a deep voice said with a hint of a growl.

Heidi’s eyes went wide as she looked around Brent at the purple alien with the badge clipped to his belt. Was he a real cop or one of those Terran guards? He knocked Brent’s legs out from under him, then pressed him face first onto the floor, wrenching Brent’s hands behind his back. Her drunken boyfriend was no match for the rather brawny guy manhandling him. The alien slapped cuffs on Brent, then pulled out a cell phone.

“Dispatch, this is Officer Raylic. Can you send a car around to pick up some trash I found beating a female?”

She didn’t hear what else was said as the room spun around her. Heidi sank to her knees and tried to process what was happening. Had someone really come to her rescue? How had he known where to find her? A small hand slipped into hers, and she looked into the terrified eyes of her son.

“Shane?”

“I found a police officer, Mama. He’ll take care of us, won’t he?” Shane asked, looking more troubled than a five-year-old had any right to.

“Are you all right?” the officer asked her.

“I don’t know. He hit me in the stomach and the face.”

Shane’s face scrunched up. “What about the baby?”

“You have a baby?” the officer asked.

“In her tummy,” Shane told him.

The officer cursed. Brent took his moment of distraction to rear up and lunge at Heidi, a murderous glint in his eyes. She jumped to her feet and lashed out at him, kicking him in the shin and hitting him in the eye. The officer made a grab for him and shoved him back down. Brent fell face first onto the floor, getting a mouthful of nasty carpet. Heidi had to admit that it had felt damn good to fight back for once.

Heidi approached her boyfriend. With a well-placed kick between his splayed legs, she had him howling and cursing her all at the same time. She felt a bit of satisfaction, knowing she’d caused him pain, but it wasn’t enough. She looked at the officer who regarded her with a bit of mirth for attacking her abuser.

“Want to have another go at him?” the officer asked.

“What I’d like to do is beat him over the head, with a cast-iron skillet, until he can’t ever hurt anyone again.”

He nodded. “I probably would get into a bit of trouble if I let you do that. But feel free to kick him again. It’s just his word against mine.”

She looked at her bare feet. “It might contaminate my foot if I kick him there again. I’ve always heard if someone accuses you of cheating, they’re probably the one with the guilty conscience. No telling where he’s put that thing.”

The officer chuckled a bit. “As soon as backup arrives to take care of him, I’m going to take you somewhere safe. We’ll stop by the Terran Station first though. I want our healer to look at you. As small as you are, he could have easily broken bones or caused internal damage.”

“Thank you for helping us,” she said. “No one’s ever helped us before.”

He frowned. “Have you called the police before now?”

She nodded. “The officer who answered the call said I was overly emotional and it was just a domestic dispute. He said if he got another call, he would haul both of us to jail. It was the first and last time I asked for help.”

“Asshole,” the officer muttered. “Do you remember who it was? I’ll make sure he’s written up.”

“Officer Clarke.”

He nodded. “I can see him saying something like that. Don’t worry. Your husband is getting locked up this time.”

“We’re not married,” she said.

“Good. Then you can make a clean break when he’s taken out of here today. Do you plan to stay in this apartment?” he asked, looking around.

She knew what he’d see. Cracked walls, stained carpets, and the ugliest furniture imaginable. The place reeked of mildew and piss, and unfortunately for her, the rent was past due. It might not have been much, but it had been home for the last year. As often as they’d been late, no way the landlord would renew the lease. Not that she could pay it anyway.

“Where are we gonna go, Mama?” Shane asked.

“I don’t know, baby.”

The officer tilted his head. “Go pack your things. I was going to take you to a hotel for the night to give you some time to think things through, but it sounds like you need a more permanent solution.”

“The rent is past due here,” she said. “I don’t have a job to pay for a hotel room. Could you take us to a shelter?”

“Don’t worry about the cost,” he said in a soothing tone. “Just pack your things and be ready to go as soon as possible. Don’t leave anything behind that you want to keep.”

#NewRelease – Summer and the Alien Guard #scifi #aliens

AlienGuard Cover

Amazon / iTunes /  B&N / Kobo

Summer would sacrifice everything to save her family,

but the alien Vordro is too sexy to ignore.

When her family is evicted from their home, Summer knows things can’t get much worse. She blames herself. She should have done something sooner, but now it’s time for drastic measures. There’s only one thing left to do, even if it means tying her life to that of an alien. She drives straight to the Terran Station.

From the moment he first sees the young Human step out of her car, Vordro is mesmerized. He’s never seen anyone so vibrant, so beautiful… or so troubled. He wants to be the answer to her prayers, even if he knows he’s too old for her. The thought of her mating with anyone other than him leaves a sour taste in his mouth. But moving Summer into his home proves to be far more temptation than he’s able to withstand.

When things get off the charts hot between them and Summer ends up pregnant, Vordro knows he’ll do anything to protect her and their unborn child — even if it means defending her from her own family.

Excerpt

Summer watched as the last of her family’s possessions were carted out of their home and loaded onto a truck. If she’d known things were this bad, she might have been able to act sooner, but her parents had never said a word about the bank foreclosing on their property or that they would literally lose everything but their clothes. She didn’t know where they were going, or how they would survive. They’d even lost all but her beat-up Toyota, an ancient car even the bank didn’t want. At twenty, she should be worrying about college. Not whether or not she’d be eating tonight.

There was only one thing she knew to do, and her parents weren’t going to be happy about it. She’d mentioned the bride program once before, and her father had shot down her idea. She’d known that money was tight, but she hadn’t realized how tight until now. If she’d known, she wouldn’t have listened to her dad and would have joined the program anyway. She’d heard they paid well if you signed up.

“We’ll stay with Aunt Martha tonight,” her dad said. “And then we’ll figure something out tomorrow.”

“I need to run some errands after we go to Aunt Martha’s,” Summer said. “I probably won’t return until dinner or later.”

Her father nodded absently as he loaded their meager belongings into the trunk. The drive to her aunt’s house was quiet and gave Summer time to think. She dropped off her parents, then drove straight to the Terran Station. When she pulled into the parking lot, she smoothed her hair and wished she’d stopped to put on makeup and maybe change her clothes. She smoothed on a little gloss, then took a breath before stepping out of her car.

As she approached the station, a tall Terran opened the door for her. She smiled her thanks and stopped at the reception desk. The woman there was on the phone, so Summer waited patiently. There was warmth at her back, and she looked over her shoulder, and up. The same Terran who had opened the door for her was now standing extremely close. She wondered if maybe she looked like someone who was about to go postal on the place.

“I promise I’m not here to cause trouble,” she said.

“I’d be happy to escort you to your destination. Are you here to meet with someone?” he asked.

“I need to sign up for the bride program.”

He studied her. “Interesting choice of words.”

“Excuse me?” She didn’t think she’d said anything wrong. Maybe he hadn’t understood her?

“You said need. Not want.”

She licked her lips. “I meant want.”

“We only take serious inquiries for the bride program. If you aren’t entering it for the right reasons, you might as well turn around and go home.”

Tears misted her eyes. “I can’t.”

His gaze softened, and he placed a hand on her waist, guiding her away from the desk. He motioned for her to take a seat and he hunkered down in front of her, the leather of his pants creaking from the movement.

“Why don’t you start by telling me what’s wrong,” he said. “And then we’ll go from there.”

“I said I need to sign up for the bride program because it’s my only hope. My family was evicted from our home today, and all our possessions were taken as well to pay off creditors. All we have are some clothes and a few pairs of shoes. My father works hard, but it’s not enough. I don’t know how else to help them.” A tear slipped down her cheek as she looked down at her lap. “Please don’t send me away.”

He reached out and gently took her hand. “I’m not going to make you leave, but I don’t think the bride program is the right choice for you.”

“I don’t know what else to do. I can’t keep a job no matter how hard I try. No one will hire me. I even saw one manager tear up my application as I exited the store.”

“Are you hungry? Or maybe you’d like some coffee?” he asked.

“I don’t think I could eat if I tried. I’m not a big coffee drinker, but I like hot chocolate.”

The Terran rose to his full height and pulled her up. “Come on. We’ll see if the café has hot chocolate.”

She let him lead her through the station to a food court area. He settled her at a table before walking off. Summer looked around and noticed several of the Terrans were watching her with interest. Would it be like that on their world, if she were to sign up for the program?

When the Terran returned, he had two cups in his hands. He gave her one with a smile and then claimed the chair next to her. She was amazed he could fit his long legs under the table, but he managed somehow.

“I’m Summer,” she said as she took a sip of her drink.

“It’s nice to meet you, Summer. My name is Vordro. Now, why don’t we talk a little about your problem and see if we can come up with a solution other than the bride program.”

ABOUT THE BOOK

Brielle has waited faithfully for her fiancé to return from Terran Prime, only to discover she’s been engaged to a lying, cheating bastard who tosses her out on her rear the moment he’s back on Earth.

Not one to go down without a fight, Brielle will do anything to ensure her survival — even sign up for a bride exchange on another world.

Syl has lived his life in his lab, always preoccupied with his experiments. But the moment he sees Brielle, he realizes that perhaps his life has been missing something after all.

Wanting and having are two different things. What would an exotic looking female like Brielle want with an alien geek like him?

EXCERPT

Syl was more than a little aware of the woman who had moved in downstairs. He’d watched from his wall of windows as she entered the building, a trail of Terrans following in her wake, all anxious to get a look at their potential mate. If he hadn’t been so busy, he might have joined their ranks. It wasn’t that there weren’t females on Terran; there just weren’t any available females on Terran. Big difference.

He looked around his pristine lab and wondered when his work had become his life. For two years now, they had accepted mates from other worlds, predominantly Earth, but not once had he ever contemplated claiming a mate for himself. His work kept him busy and had, up to this point, kept him happy. But now he wondered if maybe there was something missing in his life.

It wasn’t uncommon for him to take a trip off world every six months to visit the floating brothel nearby. He knew the women were clean, had insisted on them being tested regularly the first time he’d visited, threatened to bring it before the intergalactic council as a health hazard, but there was something lacking from the encounters. Yes, he was able to relieve some stress, but it was so… clinical. There was no passion involved; the women merely did their jobs, jobs they hadn’t asked for to begin with. His conscience always pricked, knowing he was sleeping with a woman who had been forced into that lifestyle.

What would it be like to sleep with a woman because she wanted him? What would it be like to be wanted? No one wanted him, never had. Even his own mother hadn’t known what to do with him when he was a child, always more interested in what went on in the labs than in the training fields. He came from a long line of proud warriors, and while Syl knew how to use a sword and various other weapons, it wasn’t the life choice for him. He preferred beakers of solutions, test tubes filled with green goo, or assisting the weapons designer with new projects. He worked on everything from inoculations to laser weapons. There was never a dull moment.

And yet it wasn’t fulfilling enough. Not anymore. He wanted something else in life, something he’d never thought to dream of before. Syl wanted a family, a mate to call his own and children who would either take after their beautiful mother or their brilliant father. He’d watched from his windows as families had gone on outings to the local park areas or the swimming pool, watched his friends pair off one at a time. When would it be his turn?

The new Earth woman was beautiful, from what he remembered. There had been a brief video that had played for all of Terran, a shot of her punching her ex-fiancé after she had discovered he’d cheated on her. In Syl’s opinion, she should have done much worse to the male. He obviously hadn’t been worthy of her, and to his way of thinking, she was much better off without him. He didn’t understand what had prompted her to become a bride and move to Terran, and he wouldn’t question her if they met face-to face. If she wanted to share the story, she would in her own good time, he was certain.

“What do I know of females?” he muttered as he mixed two solutions. “My own mother didn’t want me. Why would a mate?”

Nothing is set in stone, as far as dates being assigned. However, that being said, I just completed Intergalactic Loyalties #4 (Fated) last night and hope to have it to my editor no later than May 21st. If all goes according to plan, it will release in July 2016. It is under contract, but the release date will depend on edits and such. The cover art request has been turned in, but I won’t have a cover until closer to release. This isn’t the official blurb, but it will give you a little insight into the book:

This isn’t the official blurb, but it will give you a little insight into the book:

There is but one thing a Tourmalane prince wants above all else—his mate. When Lyros finds Roux on a floating brothel, he knows he must rescue the small human female. She’s alluring and yet her shyness intrigues far more than any bold beauty could have. Lyros wants to shelter her, protect her, and make her his in every way. But what if all he’s feeling is lust and not the mating pull?

When a bit of trouble on his world requires him to make a trip to Earth, he asks Roux to go with him. Once he comes to terms with the fact that she’s truly his, he will stop at nothing to claim her. As they explore her world, and one another, Lyros can’t help but fall in love with the enchanting woman he can call his own.

With a baby on the way and the fate of his world at stake, Lyros knows he must return to Tourmalane, even though Roux has fallen in love with Paris and would like to stay. Without future generations, his planet will die, as no females have been born in over twenty years. Torn between his duty as a prince and his duty as a mate, he is relieved when Roux decides to call Tourmalane her home, giving up the wonders she’s discovered on Earth.

Just when Lyros thinks he has everything figured out, Roux gives him yet another surprise. Happily-Ever-After has never felt so good.

If you prefer the Intergalactic Brides series over Loyalties, don’t despair. I’ll have another Bride book out, hopefully, by September. I have one started, but it’s still coming together in my head, which means I don’t have a blurb yet. I’m also working on another Interstellar Love Agency story, which I hope to have out by August if not sooner.

I know, it’s a lot of sci-fi. I am, actually, writing some non-science fiction books, just not under the name Jessica Coulter Smith. I have a sweeter heat level pen name for Young Adult and New Adult stories that either have no sex or closed door sex scenes (which means the sex is alluded to but not actually seen). For those of you who receive my newsletter, you know I’m talking about the name Charity West. I’ve completed two stories under that name, one of which is published (The Boyfriend Deal) and the other has been submitted to a publisher. I have a third story going under that pen name, but I’m not sure when it will be finished.

So, that’s my plan through September. At least three more alien books, and depending on how things go possibly another Charity West book. Just know that schedule isn’t set in concrete. Life happens (I lost my grandmother in March, as an example) and sometimes it derails my writing schedule. But if it’s at all humanly possible, you’ll have a book from me at least every other month (starting with Cailtlyn and the Alien Protector on May 20th).

EXCERPT

“I have a better idea,” Tiraz said. “I was going to have some boxes delivered here tomorrow so your mom could pack while you’re in school, but what if the two of you pack a bag and stay with me tonight? I can still bring your mom here tomorrow to pack.”

Simon’s eyes lit up. “And we can get something to eat on the way to your place?”

“I’ll go through whatever drive-thru you want.” Tiraz glanced at Violet to see what she thought of his idea. There were tears gathered in her eyes and he watched as she pulled herself together.

“Go pick out an outfit for school tomorrow and some pajamas. You’ll still need a bath tonight,” Violet said. “I’ll get the bag out of the closet.”

Simon whooped and hurried off, leaving Violet behind. When she looked at Tiraz, he had to lock his knees in place. The gratitude, longing, and pain he saw in her eyes was enough to make him come undone. He’d never felt anything for a woman before, but he felt a piece of the wall surrounding his heart crumble a little. Reaching for her, he pulled Violet into his arms and held her for as long as she allowed. When she pulled away, she went up on tiptoe and pressed a kiss to his jaw before hurrying away.

Tiraz reached up and touched the spot, feeling the tingle all the way to his toes. No one had ever given him such a chaste kiss before, and yet it packed more of a punch than any of the kisses his easy conquests had given him. Her kiss touched him and made him want…something. There was a shift inside of him, something he couldn’t name, as he stood staring dumbly at the door she’d just vanished through.

A few minutes later, she returned carrying an open bag, and moved toward the dresser holding the TV. He averted his gaze as she pulled out a bra and panties, wanting to give her some privacy. When he heard the drawer close, he saw that she had zipped the bag and was clutching it in her hand once more. Tiraz wasn’t about to make her carry the bag to the car and took it from her; a look of surprise flitting across her features.

SPOTLIGHT: Deadlocked

intimate moments

Brielle Connors, former officer for the elite bounty hunters the Cavalier Security Corp, is on a mission. To get her job back and make her old boss and ex-boyfriend look like a fool. After weeks of research and leg work, she finally discovers the holy grail of bounties and sets out to reel it in. Only, the alien Tulan bounty hunter, Finn Strydom, beats her to it. Rushing to the payload and bickering all the way, the two find themselves stranded on an abandoned ship with no hope of rescue. A last minute confession leads to a hot close encounter as the two face death.

EXCERPT

“I’m surprised Haakon sent you out here alone, don’t Cavaliers travel in pairs?”

Brielle frowned and strode past him to take stock of the beds; several thermal blankets and head cushions, a shelf of surgical gowns, slippers. Nothing of use.

“You aren’t your usual spirited self, Brielle. You’ve barely insulted me. What’s going on?”

“Nothing.” She opened the first set of cabinet doors; empty.

“That’s not going to cut it.” Finn stepped in her way. “In case you haven’t noticed, we are trapped. Signal the Cavaliers.”

Brielle sighed and turned. “I can’t. I don’t have my tracker anymore. It was removed.”

Finn’s brows shot up; his eyes searched her face.

“And Haakon?”

Brielle pressed her jaw shut to keep from responding. Haakon didn’t deserve any more of her consideration. He chose his side when he instructed the medic to remove her tracker.

“His loss, dearest. How that man let the second best hunter in the system slip through his fingers is beyond me.”

“Second best?”

Finn smirked.

“I don’t need to be cheered up right now. We need to get off this ship. Don’t you have some sort of beacon?”

“Independent consultant.” Finn used his fingers to quote the term. “It’s me and only me. No back up.”

“I believe I got a command to my ship. If someone is out there, we could be rescued.”

Finn smiled. “I love how optimistic humans are.”

The lights flicked off. A crack sounded and the room filled with a green glow as Finn activated a glow stick.

“That’s sort of low tech, don’t you think?”

“Would you rather be left in the dark? It works and it’s reliable.” He spun the glow stick in his hand, the light accenting his sea green skin.

Brielle returned and pressed her hands to the bed, leaning against the frame. “How long do you think we have?”

“A couple hours.” He set the glow stick on a stainless steel medical tray, amplifying the light.

This wasn’t how Brielle thought she’d die. Old age was never in the cards for her line of work, but she’d thought she’d die of something a little more glorious than hypothermia. A death in battle perhaps. Hopefully, in the line of duty beside her fellow Cavaliers.

“Perhaps if we build a shelter with the thermal blankets…” She pulled the mattresses off the two closest beds and kicked them into the corner of the room, then threw some blankets on top.

“We are more likely to run out of air than freeze to death.”

“What do you suggest? We slit our wrists, since our fate is undoubtedly decided?”

Finn let his arms drop to his sides, then approached. She had never seen his gaze so intense. She took a step back, her rear end hitting the medical bed frame.

“What are you doing?” She drew her blaster and pressed it against his chin again as he pushed himself against her.

“Something I’ve wanted to do since the moment I first saw you.”

He leaned in, his hands cupping her cheeks, and locked his lips to hers. Her blaster dipped as heat washed over her from the caress of his mouth. Her fear fell away, replaced with something else. Long repressed desire ebbed from her belly and flooded her chest. She shook herself and reasserted her threat.

“I’m not afraid to use this.” She pushed him back with the barrel of her weapon, her breath heaving from her chest.

“Oh I know, dearest. It’s part of your charm.” He flashed his fangs again with a grin, his dark eyes twinkling with amusement. “You can’t deny we have a certain chemistry.”

Brielle couldn’t deny it. But she sure as hell tried. The question was why?

“I can see you are thinking about it. Would you rather spend your last hours shivering in the dark, alone, and waiting for death? Or would you rather reap what enjoyment we can from each other and slip away while we sleep in sated exhaustion?”

Brielle snorted. “You sound pretty confident in your abilities.”

“Have you been with a Tulan before?”

“No.” She had been with Haakon so long she couldn’t remember the names of her other lovers. Haakon had been safe and predictable. The easy choice.

She looked Finn up and down; his alien body seemed shaped like her male counterparts. His black suit marred the detail, but he had broad shoulders, a narrow waist and muscled arms and legs. She scrunched her nose. “You don’t have any tentacles or claws or anything?”

“Ha, no! I assure you, we are very compatible.”
